Hi,
One of the question types “file upload” gives the ability to upload a file when answering a quiz.
I have two questions about it:
1 how can I easily access the files sent by my students? I don’t find these files among my media files.
(Please don’t tell me I have to browse the wp-content/uploads/ directory!)
2 I would appreciate getting MP3 files from my students…unfortunately, this format is not supported, right?Regards,
JacquesApril 16, 2020 at 3:03 pm #3264Kriti SharmaKeymasterHi Jacques,
You can access files uploaded by users under the results section. Right now, students can’t share mp3 files using the quiz. But if you like, I can forward it as the feature request to the development team and they will try to implement it soon.

OK we can see what users uploaded under the results section:
1 select “results” under the quiz/surveys tab
2 under the name of the quiz, click “view”
3 if it’s not an image, it won’t be displayed but you’ll find a non-clickable link
4 copy/paste the link in your browser and your file will be displayed…in the wp-content/uploads directory.
This directory is accessible to all by default, you should warn your customers about the problem of privacy it might cause.I prefer that my students would send me their MP3s by e-mail as attached files, it’s much more respectful of their privacy.

(1) There are no links to any downloadable files in my the Results section.
(2) I receive an email with an invalid link (see the _space before and after ‘Dummy’).
https://theproofreader.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/LHS-Writing-Exam-T1-2020-12345 Dummy 1-1.docxSearching variations of this link doesn’t work either.
(3) I then need to browse the wp-content/uploads/ directory which doesn’t work for the exam I’m about to give my 59 students.
Valid links to downloadable files in the Results section would be ideal. (You know from my other support requests I bought the Premium bundle but let me know if you need this from me again).
May 19, 2020 at 5:40 pm #4036Jacques NParticipantHi,
The fact that everyone could access the wp-content/uploads directory was my major concern. And I found the “Remove Dashboard Access” extension which permits me to forbid people to go inside this directory. Of course, I would not trust it too much, but I feel more confident with this extension. I think that QSM does many things, perhaps too many things because Kriti seems harassed by us, each of us complaining about his problem. I feel like a beta tester. But I did not find a better solution. As I said a few weeks ago in my first post, the basis of QSM is really good. Let’s go on.

As a result, they’ve been swamped with a million issues all of a sudden and they’re struggling to rectify them all in a timely manner. COVID19 was unforeseen and so too, I expect, was the massive, surprise upswing in demand for QSM and, subsequently, its technical issues being reported. I’m only guessing, of course but if this is the case, I don’t envy them being flooded with so many issues so quickly.
Thanks for the tip about the Remove Dashboard Access plugin. I may install it too, but not just yet as browsing the wp-content/uploads/ directory is the only way I can access the papers my students will submit in the exam I’ve created for them using QSM. However, if QSM can resolve this issue and make uploaded student files accessible via Results, then I definitely will install it.
Attn: Kriti – how are we tracking with this issue? Is there a quick fix or is it another one for the development team?
May 20, 2020 at 2:38 pm #4069Jacques NParticipantHi,
With the “Remove Dashboard Access” extension, you still have access to your wp-content/uploads/ directory and other people won’t because only you have the admin credentials.
I would be afraid that one of my students would have a look at the answers of another student and would cheat.

JacquesMay 21, 2020 at 2:23 am #4073[email protected]ParticipantGood to know. Thanks, Jacques. I’ve looked at the plugin and it looks good but I don’t currently permit user registration on my site, purely subscribers only. So I don’t think I need it at the moment. However, if I permit user accounts in the future, I’ll definitely use it. Thanks, again. You’re a legend! 🙂

May 21, 2020 at 5:45 am #4081Kriti SharmaKeymasterHi Jacques,
Can you please confirm this statement:
I would be afraid that one of my students would have a look at the answers of another student and would cheat.
How can a student have a look at the answers of another question when only you have the access of Results section of the plugin? Also, a student cannot access the answers of another student. Please clear my doubts so that I can provide you the required solution.

KritiMay 21, 2020 at 5:46 am #4082Kriti SharmaKeymasterI will forward your feature request regarding download the files from the Results section of the plugin to the development team. Our developers will try to implement this feature in the future releases.

KritiMay 21, 2020 at 6:05 am #4083[email protected]ParticipantHi Kriti,
Thank you for replying to me. I’m not sure if I should have started a separate ticket but my issue appeared to be the same as that in this open ticket.
I don’t mean to be a pain, but I need to clarify with you where am I supposed to be able to download the files from (i.e. the files which students upload using the File Upload question type).
At present, I need to browse the wp-content/uploads/ directory which isn’t practical for the exam I’m about to give my 59 students. Is this the only place I can download the students’ responses from?
I do receive an email with a link to the file which students have uploaded but the link is invalid (see the _space before and after ‘Dummy’ in my dummy upload); searching variations of this link doesn’t work either:
https://theproofreader.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/LHS-Writing-Exam-T1-2020-12345 Dummy 1-1.docxI’m thinking there must be an easier way to access files which students have uploaded than needing to browse the wp-content/uploads/ directory. I look forward to receiving your response.
May 21, 2020 at 10:58 am #4089Jacques NParticipantHi Kriti,
I hope you read carefully what I wrote. I never accused QSM to give away all the results of the quizzes. But I’ve noticed that the files sent by students via a quiz could be found in the wp-content/uploads/ directory whose access is free unless you use a special plugin to prevent this access. Some of these files might be part of the answers to an exam.

Jacques

KritiMay 22, 2020 at 5:15 am #4109Kriti SharmaKeymasterYes Jacques,
You are right, but students can access the file only if they have the correct url of it. And you being the only admin that can’t be possible.
Please confirm if I am missing something.
Regards,
Kriti -
